I’ve recently been filled with such joy as I’ve been thinking about God.  He has chosen me.  In 1 Peter 1:1 we are called the “chosen/elect” people of God. In Colossians 3:12 we are God’s chosen ones, holy and loved! 1 Thessalonians 1:4?  Same thing! Ephesians 1:11 God CHOSE us – just because he wanted to. Isn’t that awesome.  To think about an Almighty, Everlasting God who has chosen you.  Picked you. Made you part of his team – just because he wanted to.  WOW.

And then there is this moment that Jesus himself gets baptized.  God the Father shouts from heaven.  “You are my son, with whom I am well pleased!”  God is making it crystal clear: this is my boy.  My child.  I love him. I delight in him.  He is special.

This has done two things for me.

It’s given me joy.  I am chosen.  I am a child of God. A son.  Being a son is so great.  You’ve got the love of your dad so you can experiment.  You can try things.  You can have fun.  You can be a goofy kid.  Being a son means someone else (my Dad) has more responsibility and demands than I do but that I’m learning from him.  Sometimes the weight I put on myself as dad, husband and pastor is heavy – so it’s super freeing to remember “I’m a son!” I can enjoy life and have fun because I have a Father who enjoys me.

It’s renewed and challenged my heart as a parent.  I love my boys.  LOVE! I delight in them!  They are special to me.  Have I told them lately?  Do I tell them enough?  Jesus was 3o years old at that baptism moment – and he needed to hear (apparently) the delight of his Father.  The love of his Father.  My boys are only 8, 6 and 3 …. so, the way I see it, I have a lot of years of delighting and communicating my love!

Do this:

Write a thank you note to your Heavenly Father.  Thank him for believing in you, for delighting in you and for always trying to grow you up. Get specific.  Thank him!

Turn to your kids today (and the day after that and the day after that and the…) and tell them you delight in them! They are special to you.  Loved!
