I’ve been reading 1 Timothy in my personal devotions. Paul talks a lot about leaders. What makes good leaders good. What makes bad leaders bad. How good leaders should interact and deal with bad leaders.
One thing becomes crystal clear. Paul thinks that Jesus is the greatest leader. Listen – at the beginning of the letter.
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. And I am the worst of those sinners. 16 But I was given mercy. I was given mercy so that in me Christ Jesus could show that he has patience without limit. And he showed his patience with me, the worst of all sinners. Christ wanted me to be an example for those who would believe in him and have life forever. 17 Honor and glory to the King that rules forever! He cannot be destroyed and cannot be seen. Honor and glory forever and ever to the only God. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:15-17)
Jesus is THE King that rules forever. He cannot be destroyed. All honor should be given to him. All glory is his. There is no-one else on a higher pedestal than King Jesus. And this King, that is the greatest King? He is known for patience. Mercy. And grace.
Jesus is THE ruler. This is obviously important to point out on the eve of a significant election. This truth keeps this week and the results in proper perspective.
But Paul has more. He also tells us how to pray for leaders.
First, I tell you to pray for all people. Ask God for the things people need, and be thankful to him. 2 You should pray for kings and for all who have authority. Pray for the leaders so that we can have quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of worship and respect for God (1 Timothy 2:1-2)
Look, there are a lot of reasons to pray for political leaders. But at least pray these three things:
- Jesus, you are the king of me and all things. Thank you for who you lead and how you lead.
- Jesus, help our leaders to lead in such a way that peace and peaceful lives are lived.
- Jesus, help our leaders to lead in such a way that allows us to live lives full of worship and respect for you.
And if this week stresses you out? Sing this song… it will help:
